DSL Hardware Choices
- What kinds of DSL hardware does Cloud 9 sell?
There are three types of DSL hardware available.
-
The SpeedStream DSL Bridge connects any single computer with an Ethernet card to the Internet using ADSL. The SpeedStream does not require special drivers, and will work with any operating system that has support for Ethernet and TCP/IP. PPPOE support is needed on your computer, which can be found in Windows XP and MacOS X. You can also use the SpeedStream to connect to another hardware device that will handle PPPOE such as a standalone firewall, a dual-Ethernet router, or a wireless access point that also can act as a router.
-
The Zyxel 660 ADSL Router connects multiple computers (a network) using Ethernet to the Internet using DSL. It is compatible with any computer that has an Ethernet card installed. The 645R does not require special drivers or PPPOE software, and will work with any operating system that has support for Ethernet and TCP/IP. The Zyxel is a good choice for simple network installations (for example, your office connects out to the Internet, and has few if any connections from the Internet into the office), or if you already have a firewall in place.

The Sonicwall TZ 170 is powerful, expandable, and robust firewall with IPSec VPN support. It has support for stateful packet inspection, PPPOE, NAT, IP routing, mobile user and site-to-site IPSec VPNs. Optionally, virus scannning, content filtering, and anti-spam capabilities can be licensed directly from Sonicwall.
All of the hardware purchased from Cloud 9 includes the DSL bridge or router, 2 standard (desktop) microfilters, an Ethernet cable, a telephone cable, a telephone splitter, and easy to follow instructions on getting everything connected and working.
Alternatively, you can purchase your own equipment. Cloud 9 can provide you with basic settings, but can't configure the equipment or provide in-depth support in the event that you have a problem with the equipment.
Keep in mind that "broadband routers" like the Linksys BEFSR41, or similar products from SMC or D-Link won't get your DSL running without additional hardware. These devices only have Ethernet ports, and no DSL (phone line) interface. Unless you have a DSL bridge, these devices won't do anything for you. Some of these devices also have limitations with IP routing, which may prevent you from using a publicly routed subnet with Cloud 9's DSL LAN Access.

Can I use my existing DSL hardware with Cloud 9?
If you are switching to Cloud 9 from another Verizon DSL ISP, the chances are that your current hardware will work fine with our service. Depending on the hardware you have and the level of service you are getting from Cloud 9, you may want (or actually need) to purchase new hardware to take full advantage of what we offer. We can help you determine hardware compatibility and whether or not you may run into any kind of problems in the future.
DSL hardware from ISPs who do not use Verizon's DSL network will not work with Cloud 9's service. SDSL or non-Alcatel DMT ADSL hardware will not work. PCI and USB ADSL hardware (even if is compatible with Verizon's DSL network) may work, but is absolutely not recommended.

I want to use a firewall or wireless access point that I setup on my own. Can I do this?
Cloud 9 can provide basic help for getting your hardware connected to the Internet. We can provide you with all of the TCP/IP settings, PPPOE information, what kind of firewall rules you may need to set up for basic Internet access, and some tips on setting up a secure wireless network.
DSL Access service only includes a single public IP address, and Cloud 9 only provides support when connecting one computer at a time. While you may be able to work around this with additional hardware or software, we can't offer the same level of help as we would with DSL LAN Access.
